Magnitude 4.6 - YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, WYOMING
2011 February 12 02:36:09 UTC
(Showed on list and then was removed?)

Date: February 15, 2011 at 18:40:52
From: Don in Hollister
Subject: Yellowstone False Alarms

Hi all. I got curious about the false alarms we were seeing at Yellowstone so I wrote a person at USGS to see what he knew about them. He forward my email to the University of Utah. Here is their reply. Take Care...Don

"From my colleagues at the University of Utah.."

"Regarding the M 4.6 false alarm in Yellowstone, we had numerous false alarms
in Yellowstone on Friday and Saturday due to telemetry noise originating
from problems at a transmission tower. The larger false alarm on Friday was
caused by the unfortunate coincidence of a noise trigger and a small event
in Yellowstone with a small event in Utah--the MLs were all calculated for
Utah stations. The current explanation is a rusted out grounding wire or
another loose or corroded connection, but that's just a guess based on what
our technicians have been told by park service (>) people who have been to
the tower location. We're working on modifying our quality control rules to
prevent future releases of false alarms."
