Gueishan Island is 10 kilometers east of Toucheng Town and it is the largest island of Ilan County. Gueishan Island is also the only active volcano in Taiwan and is the only island with residents in Ilan. Not only the landmark of Ilan, Gueishan Island is also an emblem of Ilan spirit. Gueishan Island, a.k.a. Gueishan Yu, got its name because its shape resembles a turtle. In 1999, the government abolished the martial laws and Ilan government began to petition for making Gueishan Island a tourist attraction. In 1999, the government designated Gueishan Island to be part the Northeastern Coastal Tourist District. In order to preserve the natural environment, the number of tourists is controlled. With the growing popularity of whale watching, Gueishan Island has become the hottest tourist attraction.

Souffriere Volcano/Virgin Islands (Possible eruption)
----------------------------------------
As of the 19th of November, the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) has reported that activity at the Soufrière Hills Volcano remains elevated. The seismic network recorded 23 rockfall signals, 3 volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes and 8 long period earthquakes during the reporting period. Measured sulphur dioxide fluxes varied between 300 tonnes per day on 14 November to 1270 tonnes per day on 17 November with a weekly average of 650 tonnes per day. For most of the week the lava dome was not seen due to cloudy conditions. Clear observations on the morning of 18 November indicate the dome continues to grow and is spilling rockfalls to the East, South, West and Northwest. A pyroclastic flow was observed in the Tar River valley on 15 November and reached to within a kilometre of the sea. The ash cloud associated with this event rose to about 7000 feet.
