WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A new volcanic island has risen from the South Pacific near Tonga, according to reports from two vessels that passed the area.
The crew of the Maiken, a yacht that left the northern Tongan islands group of Vava'u in August, reported on their Web log on August 12 that they saw streaks of light, porous pumice stone floating in the water -- then "sailed into a vast, many-miles-wide belt of densely packed pumice."
They posted photos of huge "pumice rafts" that they encountered after passing Tonga's Late island while sailing toward Fiji.
"We were so fascinated and busy taking pictures that we plowed a couple of hundred meters into this surreal floating stone field before we realized that we had to turn back," wrote a crewman identified only as Haken.
The next day they spotted an active volcanic island, Haken wrote.
He said they could see the volcanic island clearly. "One mile in diameter and with four peaks and a central crater smoking with steam and once in a while an outburst high in the sky with lava and ashes. I think we're the first ones out here," he reported.
There was no official confirmation of a new island, either from Tonga's Ministry of Lands or the Tonga Defense Service.
Separately, fishing boat captain Siaosi Fenukitau reported seeing the volcanic island, the Matangitonga news Web site reported.
Richard Wunderman, editor of the Washington-based Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network, said "a large pumice raft presumably from Tonga has been sweeping across Fiji, and we are trying to learn about its origins."
A previous eruption in the area generated a small island and similar fields of floating pumice, he said.
Pumice rafts drifted to Fiji in 1979 and 1984 from eruptions around Tonga, and some were reportedly 30 kilometers (19 miles) wide, the Matangitonga reported.

Sea cucumbers in unusual appearance
10 Nov 2006
KUALA TERENGGANU: Thousands of sea cucumbers, known locally as gamat, are appearing on the Batu Buruk tourist beach.
Since Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of locals have been collecting the sea cucumbers at the beach, which is not the natural habitat of the species.
The Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre head Dr Kamaruddin Ibrahim, who was at the beach collecting samples of the sea cucumbers, said people should not eat this particular type.
"These are not the edible Galapagos sea cucumber, stichopus fuscus, which are commercially exploited worldwide for human consumption.
"We will be able to determine the species found on the Batu Buruk beach soon. But until then, I would like to ask the people not to consume the animals."
Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia’s Fisheries Science and Aquaculture Department head Dr Sakri Ibrahim said it was a new phenomenon for sea cucumbers to surface near the shore.
"Sea cucumbers are generally scavengers feeding on debris of plankton and other organic matters found on the seabed. They are usually found near rocky surroundings, such as among the coral at Pulau Kapas and Pulau Redang in Terengganu.
"The only plausible explanation for finding them in Batu Buruk is that they could have been transported by strong undercurrents."
He said the strong undercurrents could be the result of a tectonic plate movement or could be due to long waves created by strong winds.
Roslina Omar, 31, who has been running a business in the area for the past 16 years, said she had mixed feelings about the appearance of sea cucumbers.
"Of course I am excited to see so many sea cucumbers, but I am frightened at the same time, especially since the tsunami episode is still fresh in my mind."
One phenomenon of the tsunami, which hit Indonesia, Malaysia and several Asian countries in December 2004, was the emergence of large shoals of fish near the shore.
Esah Ismail, 50, a regular visitor to Kuala Terengganu, said she felt lucky to be at the right place at the right time.
"I have never held a living sea cucumber in my hands and I won’t forget this experience," said the Kelantanese, who plans to consume the sea cucumbers for its medicinal value.
