Popping Rocks Reveal New Volcano
By Larry O'Hanlon, Discovery News
http://dsc.discovery.com/news/briefs/20051...olcano_pla.htmlDiscovery

Oct. 27, 2005 — Noisy popping rocks hauled up from the deep Pacific seafloor off northern Mexico appear to be from a very young undersea volcano, say U.S. and Mexican geologists.

Some of the weird and scientifically valuable gas-charged volcanic rocks were first discovered in the same area in 1960, but no one had been able to find them again until now.

It took some careful and persistent dredging of the 10,500-foot-deep (3,200-meters) seafloor by a bi-national crew of students and researchers near what is called Popcorn Ridge, 200 miles south of San Diego near Guadalupe Island, to relocate the remarkably loud rocks.

"People don't know how many volcanoes there are off the coast here," said Dana Vukajlovich, one of the chief scientists on the cruise, organized by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.

Another Scripps oceanographer, Dale Krause, who first found the popping rocks 45 years ago.

The rocks pop because they contain pressurized pockets of gases that had bubbled out of the rock when it was molten and erupting from a submarine volcano, explained Vukajlovich.

But under intense pressure two miles underwater, the bubbles remained locked inside the lava rocks. Once brought to the surface, however, where the pressure is a small fraction as much, the high-pressure gases in pockets near the surfaces of the rocks broke through explosively.

"It's kind of like the sound of ice cracking in water," said Dana Vukajlovich, describing the racket made by spontaneous explosions of the rocks when they were brought aboard the Roger Revelle research vessel in early October.

Unlike ice in water, however, the rocks were was as loud as firecrackers, she said. "You could hear it over the sound of the machinery on deck." There were even small pieces of the rocks flying off, she said.

And while all the noise is exciting, it's not what makes them so valuable to scientists, she said.

"They're pretty rare," said geochemist David Graham of Oregon State University of the few sites where popping rocks have been found worldwide. "They're typically found on relatively slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridges."

That's an undersea rift zone where the crust of the Earth is being pulled in opposite directions and there are many volcanoes spewing out molten rock to fill the gap.

The rocks from what Vukajlovich's crew has dubbed the Krause Volcano are the only popping rocks found outside the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, said Graham.

On the Heels of an Earlier Quake, 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Three Caribbean Countries
By AP
Oct 29, 2005, 18:55

PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD - An earthquake has shaken two Caribbean islands and Venezuela.

The 5.5 magnitude quake struck at about 6:30pm and was felt in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Venezuela. That's according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Unit.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centered about 45 miles off the coast of Trinidad.

The latest quake came just days after a magnitude 4.9 temblor jolted Trinidad and Grenada on Monday. There were no reports of damage or injuries then or Friday.
(Much further north than expected.)
ADVERSE conditions at the first Ceremony for the Presentation of Graduates of the University of the West Indies failed to put a damper on the spirits of the hundreds of graduates and guests at Friday night’s event. The ceremony was held at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC) which could not accommodate all the invited guests. As a result some of them had to sit under a tent in the SPEC car park to view the ceremony on a screen. In addition, the air condition unit inside the SPEC had shut down, forcing several of the formally dressed guests to use their programmes as fans throughout the ceremony.

In attendance at the event were graduates and their guests, UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne, Vice-Chancellor Nigel Harris, honorary graduates Raymond Gosling and Mary Mendez, Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Bhoendraadatt Tewarie and other distinguished personalities. Following the academic procession and prior to the chancellors’ procession, the building was rocked by an earthquake at approximately 6.30 pm. The tremour brought complete silence to the gathering as even the Police Band suddenly stopped playing. However, the gathering came to life during the award of degrees, diplomas and certificates. Hand claps, shouts of names, screams, smiles and camera flashes filled the room as the graduates crossed the stage.

“Over the past two years I have marvelled at the increase in enrolment. I have to congratulate the principal, staff and students. However, I question whether the quality of the experience of those who come after you would be as high as yours,” Alleyne said during his address. He went on to underscore the need for the integration of online and first-hand learning at a time when purely online education is “second best” but may soon predominate. He also pointed to a marked decrease in enrolment by other Caribbean nationals at UWI St Augustine.

“When 92 percent of the enrolment in UWI is from Trinidad, this cannot be good,” Alleyne declared. Gosling, a world-renowned scientist, delivered the graduation address in which he offered insight into his university career and pointed out that his job satisfaction did not come from financial gain. Following the formal ceremony, there was a reception which was also affected by adverse conditions as heavy rain caused water to seep into the large tents outside of the SPEC.

Perishable food stocks in the Cayman Islands are running low as five cargo ships containing food destined for the country’s supermarkets, are stationary offshore due to damage to the George Town Port and by the sea surge associated with Hurricane Wilma, which forced the facility out of commission for a week.

Although one ship was expected to dock on Thursday 27 October the weather conditions and damage from Wilma both here and in Florida was playing havoc with food deliveries.

The Port Authority halted operations at the seaport and cruise ship berth during the passage of the hurricane which reached category five when it passed 170 miles southwest of the Island on Wednesday 19 October.

The National Emergency Management’s calls to prepare for the hurricane was heeded and some supermarkets became partially emptied of perishable goods during a mad rush to stock up.

Store Manager, Renick Christian, said that the store, which he runs, Kirk Supermarket in George Town, could be out of perishable goods in a few days.

“We are running out of stocks so we are hoping the ships can dock here soon. We could be out of perishable items in a few days,” he said.

He added that his company carried out a brisk business last week as shoppers showed up in larger than usual numbers to stock up in preparation for the forth-coming storm and water was the most consumed item.

The situation at Hurley’s Supermarket was regarded as “very crucial” by Store Manager, Raul Mena.

“Our fresh produce, milk and eggs, which are in high demand on an everyday basis are very limited and that is crucial.

“We are monitoring the situation at the Port before taking action,” he said.

Store Manager at Foster’s Supermarket, Tanya Foster, said stocks were imported from Florida to meet the urgent need for perishables.

“We imported a plane load of fresh produce, chicken and milk to meet the demand of our customers,” she said.

Ms Foster added that her supermarket would absorb the cost of importing by air, which is far costlier than shipping.

However if the situation is to continue and food has to be flown in for all the supermarkets then shoppers could see some price increases.

However as Port Director Paul Hurlston believes the situation should be rectified at the latest by Friday, 28 October, once the sea conditions improve, hopefully none of the stores will have to resort to the costly way of importing stock.

“We have everything in place to get started as soon as the weather improves,” said Mr Hurlston. “We have a lot of experience in handling these situations.

“It has had a negative impact on the Port but hopefully we can get back into business by Thursday or Friday,” he said on Wednesday. He added that there was damage to one of the cruise ship terminals as well, to asphalt, fences, doors and washrooms.

Floods Maroon One Million In Eastern India
By Reuters
Oct 24, 2005, 08:14

An Indian villager with a bicycle wades through a flooded street in Kudi, about 190 km (120 miles) from the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, October 23, 2005. Tens of thousands of people were marooned by flooding in eastern India on Sunday after four days of torrential rains that killed at least 12 people, local media reported. (Parth Sanyal/Reuters)
KOLKATA, INDIA - At least one million people were marooned on Monday by flooding in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal after five days of torrential rains left 14 dead, officials said.

Relief workers were using boats to ferry supplies of puffed rice and molasses to hundreds of villages cut off by the floods.

"The flooding has left more than a million people stranded in the state's south. We are reaching relief materials to them," West Bengal village development minister Surya Kanta Mishra said.

At least two rivers in southern Sunderbans region had breached their banks, flooding 60 villages, officials said, and large areas of the paddy-growing state were submerged by muddy flood waters.

They said more than a dozen people had been killed by collapsed walls in houses and electrocution.

The unseasonal rains in largely low-lying West Bengal came after the June-September monsoon season ended in India. Hundreds were killed in flooding and mudslides triggered by rains during the summer which shut down India's financial hub of Mumbai for four days.

In West Bengal, thousands of people sheltered in schools and government buildings after hundreds of mud houses were washed away.

Weather officials said the rains had been triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

Subject: Volcano Erupts on Galapagos Island

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) -- A volcano has begun to erupt on one of the Galapagos Islands known for its diverse flora and fauna, including the archipelago's famed giant tortoises, park officials said Sunday.

The 1,500-meter (4,920-feet) Sierra Negra volcano, located on seahorse-shaped Isabela, the largest of the Galapagos Islands, began erupting late Saturday afternoon, producing three lava flows, officials from the Galapagos National Park told The Associated Press in a statement.

It has not yet been determined whether the island's plant and animal life have been affected.

Many Galapagos tortoises, some of which have a lifespan of more than 150 years, live near volcano craters.

Puerto Villamil on Isabela's southern coast is home to 2,000 people, but the eruption posed "no risk to the population," the statement said. Tourist centers near Sierra Negra were closed as a precaution.

The Galapagos Islands, located 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) off Ecuador's Pacific coast, were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for their exotic wildlife such as marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies.

The islands' rich biodiversity inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

Recovering from Wilma - Message from PDA Member in Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Merida, Yucatan, Mexico - 23 October 2005

Dear PDA Fellows,

My name is Pasquale Monteleone and I have been a PDA friend for the last two years or so, but I am above all a current citizen of the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico. Benefiting from the return of electricity and phone connections, after the precautionary disconnection operated by the state government with the arrival of the hurricane Wilma, I thought I would catch up the occasion to write a very quick report and appeal to all of you who may be interested in knowing about the real status quo in this area and possibly supporting the recovery of these devastated areas or, in the worst case, to those of you who may have friends or family in the affected areas.

The Mexican people received the first blow early in October, with the arrival of the hurricane Stan, whose strength and dispersion have cumulated a number of some 750 deaths throughout Central America, and an official amount of 2,500 homeless people specifically in Mexico. In line with the saying "when it rains, it pours," the Mexican state that was mostly affected is that of Chiapas, internationally renowned to be the residency of the Subcomandante Marcos, yet locally known to be one of the poorest areas of the country and the economically most distressed one; in this case, the hurricane caused the overflowing of such a number of rivers that many of the poorest villages were submersed by running water and mud. For its form, development and route, Stan proved to be a first sign of climatic anomaly, considering that after having destroyed much of Chiapas, it went further up in Mexico, hitting and inundating areas that have historically been untouched by this kind of phenomena.

Shocked, saddened and beaten by the human and physical damage caused by Stan's violence, Mexico was barely recuperating when, as of three days ago, Wilma touched base on the Yucatan Peninsula and broke three records: 21st tropical storm (last record in 1933); 12th hurricane (last record in 1969); and 3rd category 5 hurricane of the season (last record in 1960) for the Atlantic hurricane season of 2005. Last but not least, Wilma ended up being the most intense hurricane that has ever formed in the Atlantic and the 10th most intense the world has seen in recorded history.

Today, 23 of October 2005, Wilma has taken off the Yucatan peninsula leaving records of up to 295km/h fast winds and some 882mb pressure in its strength. Even though the number of casualties has luckily been low (7 people in total) matched against the 250 deaths caused by 1988's Gilbert, all the rest is quite a tragic panorama:

* The inundations caused by its waves, which reached 10m in height, have remarkably damaged/destroyed some 40% of the surface in the Cancun area, including the islands facing the city;
* Some 1,200 homes and over 50 hotels result either dramatically damaged or risking collapse due to the structural weakening/damage; the violence of the rain, wind and waves has been such that even some shelters have had to be evacuated for potential downfall of the roof and walls;
* Much of the seaside has been either "erased" or destroyed, taking into account that the waves have completely covered the immediate coastline or, in the case of Cancun, blended with the local laguna, and forming a unique "lake," even with the freeing of crocodiles into the inundated area and consequent risk to the people;
* In terms of electricity, gas, telephone and road connections, much of the Mayan Riviera and part of the state of Yucatan are still either inaccessible or remarkably damaged, with unforecastable recuperation timeframes;
* A total of some 60,000 people, between tourists and citizens have been evacuated from the affected areas and also in this case the possibility to return to their homes is not a forecastable data, at least until the means of communication and people's safety can be guaranteed.

At this stage, the most urgent and heart-felt mission is that of providing support to the affected areas either via economic funding or through the organization of shipping of useful goods. We shall all take into account that both in Chiapas and in the Cancun area, the inundation has been such that much of the food provisions in supermarkets, bigger and smaller grocery stores, and private homes have gone...damaged or lost. We are all friends, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers....let's give a hand to a country and a people whose economic weakness has been dramatically increased due to the latest climatic catastrophes.

The following links, from the Mexican Presidency and the Red Cross have information pertaining to the channels to be used to support the Mexican areas hit by the hurricanes. Further information may be available either from local Red Cross offices or via the Mexican diplomatic bureaus across the world.

Mexican Caribbean slammed by Hurricane Wilma
Sunday, October 23, 2005 5:33:46 AM ET

By Noel Randewich

CANCUN, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexico's famed Caribbean resorts were knee-deep in water on Sunday after Hurricane Wilma roared through, smashing homes and killing at least six people, as the storm set a new course for Florida.

Three full days of howling hurricane winds and rain left towns along the coast badly flooded, and thousands of sullen tourists spent their third night in dark stuffy refuges with no running water and food running short.

Hundreds of thousands of people suffered serious damage to their homes as the storm moved slowly over the Yucatan peninsula, knocking out power lines and tearing off roofs.

The long spit of white sand that draws planeloads of sun seekers to Cancun was under water. Luxury hotels were flooded and littered with debris after the normally tranquil sea off Quintana Roo state roared inland.

"The structural damage is everywhere and the winds are still strong," Quintana Roo Gov. Felix Gonzalez said late on Saturday as the army prepared to send in trucks and planes with food, water, medical kits and building materials.

President Vicente Fox was also due to fly to the area on Sunday.

In Florida, hurricane warnings were in effect for the Florida Keys and along the state's west coast from Longboat Key southward and the east coast from Titusville south. A hurricane warning was also in effect for Havana and western Cuba. Such warnings mean hurricane conditions are expected within 24 hours.

In Cancun, locals and tourists alike endured another night in cramped refuges with no electricity -- most of them in damp 3-day-old clothes and dreaming of hot food and a warm bed.

"We wanted to do it all -- the lobster cruise, the booze cruise," sighed Dwayne Redmond, a Chicago firefighter who came to Mexico with his wife for the vacation of a lifetime.

Many foreigners said they craved a beer to cheer them up, but alcohol sales have been banned since Wilma hit on Thursday.

Adding to the gloom, rumors circulated that flights from Cancun might not resume for days and tourists may have to be bused out of the Yucatan peninsula, famous for its turquoise coral-filled seas, white sand and Mayan ruins.

As the storm eased on Saturday evening, people ventured out in search of food, and some took advantage of the chaos to loot. Dozens waded out of smashed stores clasping plasma TVs, fridges and bundles of clothes on hangers. Police fired shots into the water to try to scatter them.

Rescue workers in boats plucked families from houses where the muddy water was chest-high.

Is it a Volcano Emitting Ash, Smoke in Kashmir?
By IRNA
Oct 22, 2005, 09:11

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN - Is it a volcano that is emitting ash and smoke ever since the deadliest-ever earthquake struck parts of Pakistan and Kashmir?

This is the topic being discussed and the question being asked by those who have visited Pakistan-administered Kashmir's Muzaffarabad locality.

Geo, a private local television channel, ran a video film and also interviewed some local people there on Saturday.

In its bulletin, the TV channel pointed out that ash, smoke and stones had been seen coming down from a hilltop many kilometers away since the quake two weeks back.

The hill has been causing landslides ever since the day of the disaster up to now.

The quake was so intense that portions of roads in many cities and towns fell across other hills and ditches.

Even some people say that they saw many unfortunate people falling into fissures created by the earthquake along roads and streets in Kashmir.

The worst-ever earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, struck the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan and Kashmir on October 8.

It has so far killed over 60,000 people and injured more than 70,000 besides rendering over 3 million homeless.

The death toll and number of injured persons is climbing with each passing day.

A senior officer of the Pakistan Army told the television that it was not a volcano that was emitting ash but a phenomenon that erupted after the occurrence of the tremor.

According to locals, there is nothing strange about the emissions, he added.

But it is significant that this has never surfaced in the media before despite the fact that the local population calls it a normal occurrence.

3 weather systems blamed for big waves
Anna-Lisa Paul apaul@trinidadexpress.com

Tuesday, October 18th 2005

The Meteorological Office at Piarco has said that the unusually big waves which flooded Maracas Bay and surrounding environs on Sunday were caused by three separate weather systems in the region.

In an official release, the Met Office said Sunday´s huge waves were due mainly to swells generated by tropical depression #22, which formed nine days ago north of Puerto Rico.

It was stated that the swells generated from this system would have travelled to the south-southeast of the centre, and reach the west coast of Tobago and portions of the north and west coasts of Trinidad Sunday morning.

In addition, waves from Tropical Storm Wilma, which was in its embryo stages southeast of Jamaica last week, have also contributed to the huge waves on Sunday. A weather system, although upper level in origin but eventually reaching the surface, has generated and continues to generate rough seas to the northeast of Trinidad.

The Met Office has admitted that it was "unusual for energy emanating from these three systems, the latter two in particular, to sustain itself for that distance to T&T".

Speaking with the Daily Express yesterday, Assistant Director, Met Office, Emmanuel Moolchan explained that the conditions were also enhanced by local storm conditions experienced on Sunday, and could have been the cause of the gigantic waves which sent hundreds scampering for safety.

A rough seas bulletin was issued late yesterday by the Met Office, as waves in excess of three metres will continue to affect coastal areas of T&T. Small craft operators and sea bathers were advised to exercise extreme caution.

The Seismic Research Unit at UWI has ruled out under-water earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions as possible causes.

Education officer at the Unit, Stacey Edwards, said that records at the Seismic Research Unit showed absolutely no evidence of any hydro-geologic phenomena, and as a result, the huge waves could not be classified as tsunamis.

Maracas Beach remained open to the public yesterday and the cautionary red flags were put out by lifeguards on duty at around 10 a.m.

However, the shoreline was littered with vultures feasting on dead fish, and debris brought in by the waves. The roadway and parking lot were also covered with mud and slush.

Lifeguard Wayne Drysdale told the Daily Express that although the beach remained open, once weather conditions worsened as they were expected to, members of the public would be ordered to leave the area as it would be unsafe.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) said affected coastal areas included Matelot, Sans Souci, King´s Wharf at San Fernando, Fullerton, Icacos, Los Gallos and parts of Chaguaramas.

The Tourism and Industrial Development Company (TIDCO) has assured that a damage assessment would be done to the facilities at Maracas Beach, and that a clean-up campaign is underway.

graben
1. n. [Geology] ID: 252

A relatively low-standing fault block bounded by opposing normal faults. Graben (used as both singular and plural) can form in areas of rifting or extension, where normal faults are the most common type of fault. Between graben are relatively high-standing blocks called horsts. A half-graben is a downdropped block bounded by a normal fault on only one side.

See: aulacogen, fault, horst, normal fault, rift, strike-slip fault

Aleutian volcano rumbling

By DOUG O'HARRA
Anchorage Daily News

Published: October 6, 2005
Last Modified: October 6, 2005 at 11:06 AM

A mysterious volcano in the western Aleutian Islands began stirring this month, trembling with lots of tiny earthquakes six to 12 miles underground, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The swarm beneath 5,925-foot Tanaga marks the first sign of unrest since the observatory wired the rugged cone with its own network of sensors two years ago, said volcanologist Rick Wessels, of the U.S. Geological Survey. The volcano was last known to erupt in 1914.

Most Aleutian Arc volcanoes produce batches of tiny quakes every day, but Tanaga had been remarkably quiet for reasons that remain unclear, Wessels said.

“It had one reasonably measurable event every month or so, and now it’s gone to several per hour,” he said.

The nearest inhabited community is Adak, 63 miles to the east. The volcano is more than 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage. It's one of 28 volcanoes the observatory monitors around the clock, including the 11,070-foot Mount Spurr that looms on the horizon 80 miles due west of Anchorage.

Aleutian volcanoes like Tanaga can erupt with lava and explosions, sending ash clouds five to six miles into the sky and endangering jetliners over the North Pacific.

The new swarm of quakes doesn’t necessarily mean Tanaga will erupt anytime soon, and the volcano’s alert level was not raised yet, Wessels said.
