On the Heels of an Earlier Quake, 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Three Caribbean Countries
By AP
Oct 29, 2005, 18:55

PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD - An earthquake has shaken two Caribbean islands and Venezuela.

The 5.5 magnitude quake struck at about 6:30pm and was felt in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Venezuela. That's according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Unit.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centered about 45 miles off the coast of Trinidad.

The latest quake came just days after a magnitude 4.9 temblor jolted Trinidad and Grenada on Monday. There were no reports of damage or injuries then or Friday.
(Much further north than expected.)
ADVERSE conditions at the first Ceremony for the Presentation of Graduates of the University of the West Indies failed to put a damper on the spirits of the hundreds of graduates and guests at Friday night’s event. The ceremony was held at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC) which could not accommodate all the invited guests. As a result some of them had to sit under a tent in the SPEC car park to view the ceremony on a screen. In addition, the air condition unit inside the SPEC had shut down, forcing several of the formally dressed guests to use their programmes as fans throughout the ceremony.

In attendance at the event were graduates and their guests, UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne, Vice-Chancellor Nigel Harris, honorary graduates Raymond Gosling and Mary Mendez, Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Bhoendraadatt Tewarie and other distinguished personalities. Following the academic procession and prior to the chancellors’ procession, the building was rocked by an earthquake at approximately 6.30 pm. The tremour brought complete silence to the gathering as even the Police Band suddenly stopped playing. However, the gathering came to life during the award of degrees, diplomas and certificates. Hand claps, shouts of names, screams, smiles and camera flashes filled the room as the graduates crossed the stage.

“Over the past two years I have marvelled at the increase in enrolment. I have to congratulate the principal, staff and students. However, I question whether the quality of the experience of those who come after you would be as high as yours,” Alleyne said during his address. He went on to underscore the need for the integration of online and first-hand learning at a time when purely online education is “second best” but may soon predominate. He also pointed to a marked decrease in enrolment by other Caribbean nationals at UWI St Augustine.

“When 92 percent of the enrolment in UWI is from Trinidad, this cannot be good,” Alleyne declared. Gosling, a world-renowned scientist, delivered the graduation address in which he offered insight into his university career and pointed out that his job satisfaction did not come from financial gain. Following the formal ceremony, there was a reception which was also affected by adverse conditions as heavy rain caused water to seep into the large tents outside of the SPEC.
